Art of Digital Printmaking
4-HOUR HANDS-ON WORKSHOP

Advanced Digital Darkroom Class

Photoshop Elements Essentials: Beginning Digital Darkroom Course by Mike MacDonald Photography LEVEL: ADVANCED (for those who regularly make their own prints)
(View Course Requirements)

This 4-hour hand-on workshop is a creative course on the art of digital printmaking. It's about how to read an image and understand its visual story and undercurrents. It's about how to get a feel for the subject matter and how all the pieces fit together. Once understood, it is then possible to create a final image that most powerfully communicates your message and personal vision.

This is a class that APPLIES Photoshop, not a class ABOUT Photoshop. It's about the making of a print, not digital printing. Yes, you will probably learn a couple of new Adobe Photoshop tricks, but what's taught is how to apply the many techniques that you already know and use to make the best possible print. Knowing how to use a tool is one thing, but knowing when to use it and how to use it will elevate your printmaking into a different league.  (Gift Cards for this class are available.)

We begin the class by simply working on a digital image that came straight out of a digital camera or from scanned film. We'll start in Adobe Camera Raw to optimize the file and then move into Photoshop to perform the fun and creative work.

Every picture is a little bit of a puzzle, but landscapes are easily the most puzzling because of the myriad subjects that need to all work together. Of course, much of the puzzle needs to be solved at the time of exposure in terms of composition and lighting. But, that's not enough to make a great looking print.

One reason for this is that a print relies on reflected light for you to see it. Whereas, film transparencies and digital images are projected from behind, making the image glow and appear more 3-dimensional. However, the most important reason is that the image captured by the camera is merely the beginning of the process of conveying the photographer's vision.

This digital printmaking class will most benefit anyone who makes pictures that are complex like landscape and architectural photographers. However, any photographer who prints his own work will benefit from what is taught.

Please read the Course Requirements before applying. It is very important that you have a firm grasp of Photoshop.
